NEED OF ELECTRIC VEHICLES IN INDIA
Indian car manufacturers like Reva Electric Car Company and Indian app-based fleet companies like OLA are already working on making electric cars more common over the next two decades. Lithium Technologies launched a fully electric taxi service for corporates in 2015 & In June 2017, Bangalore based logistic group Baghirathi Travel Solutions became the first company in the country to launch electric sedan as a taxi fleet. In January 2019, Blu-Smart mobility has launched all-electric Taxi service in Delhi with a fleet of 70 Mahindra eVerito cars with plans of expansion to 400 cars by March 2019. Tata Motors and Mahindra are already supplying their electric cars to the Union government.
CATEGORIES OF ELECTRIC VEHICLES IN INDIA
Electric Vehicles are classified in 2 major categories as per the degree of electricity used as their energy source; All-electric vehicles (AEVs) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs). All-electric vehicles are then further classified as Battery electric vehicles (BEVs) & Fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs)

All these electric batteries require charging and charging stations are not enough for these Electric Vehicles across the country. Thus the development of charging infrastructure becomes the key priority for bringing about successful EV culture in India. Many car manufacturers working towards electric cars have raised concerns over the inadequacy of the same. Latest news indicates that there are plans to provide solar-powered charging points at the existing fuel stations of the country. There also are initiatives to set up community charging stations, as in the case of Plugin India facilitated charging stations. Car manufacturers are also planning to set up massive charging infrastructure with big charging stations comprising of multiple charging points.
Ministry of Power launched the ‘National Electric Mobility Mission Plan (NEMMP) 2020’. The objective of National e-Mobility programme is to enable and govern the entire EV ecosystem including Electric car manufacturers, charging infrastructure development companies, fleet operators, service providers etc. Simultaneously Government is also taking measures to promote domestic manufacturing of EVs in support with Make in India movement. The government has notified phased increase in basic customs duty on parts of electric passenger vehicles to be assembled in India to 15 percent from April 2020 and 10 percent on imported lithium-ion cells by April 2021. The Union Cabinet approved setting up of ‘National Mission on Transformative Mobility and Battery Storage’ to drive clean, connected, shared and sustainable mobility initiatives in the country.
Maruti Suzuki says that the nation-wide field testing of 50 prototype Electric Vehicles In India will bring about extensive real-life usage of the vehicles in multiple terrains and climatic conditions and will help the company get valuable insights that will help in validation and successful launch of Electric Vehicle technology in India. Testing of these vehicles will also help Maruti Suzuki to gather critical inputs based on customer perspectives and will help to create a reliable and suitable Electric Vehicle to delight Indian customers.
