ELECTRIC VEHICLES IN INDIA: UPCOMING CAR TECHNOLOGY

NEED OF ELECTRIC VEHICLES IN INDIA

We all are well aware of current global issues pertaining to depletion of natural resources, increase in pollution levels, Greenhouse effect due to fuel emissions and so on. Our reliance on petroleum makes us vulnerable to price spikes and supply disruptions. Electric Vehicles in India and their extensive use is one good solution and the next big change in the Automobile Industry. The benefit of Electric Vehicle Technology is that EVs can reduce the emissions that contribute to climate change and smog, improving public health and reducing ecological damage. While India is working on a target of making 30% of all vehicles to be all-electric by 2030, Maruti Suzuki is working on its commitment of introducing an Electric Vehicle by 2020. In line with this commitment, they flagged off proto-type EVs for field test from their Gurgaon plant in 2018. Other major car companies like Hyundai Motor Co., Volvo cars, Kia Motors India have already announced their plans to soon launch electric cars in India. MG motors have announced that they’ll launch an all-electric SUV in India in the 4th quarter of this year in select cities across the country, to begin with.

Indian car manufacturers like Reva Electric Car Company and Indian app-based fleet companies like OLA are already working on making electric cars more common over the next two decades. Lithium Technologies launched a fully electric taxi service for corporates in 2015 & In June 2017, Bangalore based logistic group Baghirathi Travel Solutions became the first company in the country to launch electric sedan as a taxi fleet. In January 2019, Blu-Smart mobility has launched all-electric Taxi service in Delhi with a fleet of 70 Mahindra eVerito cars with plans of expansion to 400 cars by March 2019. Tata Motors and Mahindra are already supplying their electric cars to the Union government.

CATEGORIES OF ELECTRIC VEHICLES IN INDIA

Electric Vehicles are classified in 2 major categories as per the degree of electricity used as their energy source; All-electric vehicles (AEVs) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs). All-electric vehicles are then further classified as Battery electric vehicles (BEVs) & Fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs)

All these electric batteries require charging and charging stations are not enough for these Electric Vehicles across the country. Thus the development of charging infrastructure becomes the key priority for bringing about successful EV culture in India. Many car manufacturers working towards electric cars have raised concerns over the inadequacy of the same. Latest news indicates that there are plans to provide solar-powered charging points at the existing fuel stations of the country. There also are initiatives to set up community charging stations, as in the case of Plugin India facilitated charging stations. Car manufacturers are also planning to set up massive charging infrastructure with big charging stations comprising of multiple charging points.

Ministry of Power launched the ‘National Electric Mobility Mission Plan (NEMMP) 2020’. The objective of National e-Mobility programme is to enable and govern the entire EV ecosystem including Electric car manufacturers, charging infrastructure development companies, fleet operators, service providers etc. Simultaneously Government is also taking measures to promote domestic manufacturing of EVs in support with Make in India movement. The government has notified phased increase in basic customs duty on parts of electric passenger vehicles to be assembled in India to 15 percent from April 2020 and 10 percent on imported lithium-ion cells by April 2021. The Union Cabinet approved setting up of ‘National Mission on Transformative Mobility and Battery Storage’ to drive clean, connected, shared and sustainable mobility initiatives in the country.

Maruti Suzuki says that the nation-wide field testing of 50 prototype Electric Vehicles In India will bring about extensive real-life usage of the vehicles in multiple terrains and climatic conditions and will help the company get valuable insights that will help in validation and successful launch of Electric Vehicle technology in India. Testing of these vehicles will also help Maruti Suzuki to gather critical inputs based on customer perspectives and will help to create a reliable and suitable Electric Vehicle to delight Indian customers.

Well, let’s wish them success and wait for their first Electric Vehicle launch.
